The Eyetoad Challenge #13

Eyetoad Challenge #13

By Pierre Berthier

We are thrilled to announce the winner of the 13th Eyetoad Creative Challenge, on the theme of Shops and merchants in The Weald.

First place goes to Vlank, who charmed everyone with a whimsical, light-hearted take on a world that is usually grim, muddy, and shrouded in darkness. Her entry brought a refreshing brightness to The Weald without losing its unique spirit.

Sharing second place ex aequo, we have Thek and Quarantine Miniatures, who both leaned into a much more grimdark interpretation of the theme. Each delivered their own distinctive twist, proving once again how many ways our world can be reimagined.

Overall, this challenge was an incredible success: the quality reached new heights, the styles were diverse and bold, and many newcomers made their debut with works that instantly felt at home in The Weald.

Thanks to everyone who painted, voted, or just followed along — you’re making these challenges something really special. Can’t wait to see what the next round brings!

PS: the next challenge will be announced at the beginning of the new year, expect it to start in January

Thanks a lot to all the other participans who’s entries are featured below!

5th Anniversary

Five years of community and creativity. In late 2020 the legendary Max opened the Weald Discord Server. Since then some 500 members have joined The Weald. A small number compared to other more hyped Indie game servers. But we are still alive and kicking...and thriving.  We invite you to a nostalgic trip into some highlights and milestones of The Weald as a game and as a creative community.

Building the Church of Rot

Although much that is reported to be happening in The Weald is uncertain, confused or simply inaccurate; it is known that there is growing unease and disturbance spreading from the North: a creeping terror casting a black shadow across the land and its people.

Japanese Inspired Warband Creation with Weird Witticism

In late 2024, I had the privilege of collaborating with sculptor Will Thomas—better known as Weird Witticism—whose return to the hobby world brought fresh, uncanny energy to miniature crafting. Our shared love for Japanese folklore shaped a warband rooted in feudal mysticism and forest rot, blending Shinto symbols with eerie creatures of the Weald. From twisted bark-skinned Thralls to fungal-eyed toads and moss-covered beasts, each model felt like a sacred relic—equal parts haunting and heartfelt. When they arrived, it was like cracking open a memory from childhood, but filtered through years of passion and obsession.

WEALDCON2023

In late August 2023, deep in the shadow of the Black Forest, WealdCon brought together hobbyists from across Europe for a weekend of dice, narrative, and dark fantasy. As fog rolled over the pines, players gathered around handcrafted terrain to breathe life into The Weald—a brutal, folklore-infused skirmish game rooted in 28-style creativity. At the heart of the event was The Siege of Mudmire, a collaborative campaign where twisted Gnarl warbands clashed with beleaguered Wardens in a desperate defense. It was more than just gaming—it was a celebration of community, storytelling, and the eerie magic of shared imagination.
